Why an app when there is a website

The web version works well. The problem is not the app but where it lives: in one tab among twenty others. And a tab has two drawbacks that no web page can fix from the inside.

First, notifications in a tab get lost. Nobody watches a dot on a favicon, and when the tab sits in the background the browser slows delivery down or stops it. Second, a tab has to be found. Alt-Tab finds an app; a tab has to be hunted for.

The desktop app solves exactly these two things — and invents nothing beyond them.

What the app adds

Native notifications — a new task, message or meeting note is announced by the operating system even when the window is minimised. In the background the app keeps fetching notifications, just at a calmer pace.
Its own window and icon in the taskbar and the Dock. The app remembers window position and size, and launching it twice raises the first window instead of opening a second.
Automatic updates — the app notices a new version itself and offers it in a bar above the content. You confirm, it downloads, installs and restarts.
A session that holds — you type your password once, not at every launch. The sign-in screen can also remember your e-mail address; the password is never stored.
A macOS menu bar in four languages, and links outside CTM that open in your system browser — including connecting Google Calendar, which an embedded window would refuse.
A proper offline screen instead of the browser error page when you are not connected.

Video calls, attachment downloads, PDF export and .ics invitations all work in the window exactly as they do in the browser.

What the app deliberately does not do

There is no offline mode. The app has no local database and will not show your tasks without a connection. This is not an omission, it is a decision. Any feature living only in the desktop version would have to be maintained twice and would drift away from the web over time. One app that behaves the same everywhere is worth more.

For the same reason it has no extra desktop-only features. Inside the window runs the very application you know from the browser, talking to the same server. You can switch between the two at any moment and nothing needs transferring.

Why the installer is a few megabytes

Most desktop apps today bundle an entire browser and ship it in the installer. That is where the hundreds of megabytes on disk and in memory come from.

CTM uses the webview your computer already has — WebView2 on Windows, WKWebView on macOS. The installer is therefore a few megabytes and the app behaves like part of the system rather than a second browser running in the background.

Installing it — and one warning you will see

The /download page detects your operating system and offers the right file: .exe or .msi for Windows 10 and 11, a universal .dmg for macOS 10.15 and later (Apple Silicon and Intel in one file).

On first launch Windows shows the blue SmartScreen dialog and macOS asks whether you really want to open the app. We will say why plainly: the installers are not yet signed with a certificate. A signing certificate is an annual cost we plan to take on; until then the system warns about every unknown application the same way. The download page explains step by step how to get past that dialog.

What it costs

Nothing. The app is part of every plan including Free, and it is not a separate product — it is another way to reach the same account. What your plan includes is listed on the pricing page.

On a phone there is nothing to download: CTM is a Progressive Web App, so it can be added to an iPhone or Android home screen straight from the browser, with no app store.
